The Heart of Petraia

A walk around the core 25 acres of Petraia's 175-acre property. The story of bringing the buildings and the fields of Petraia to an organic and biodynamic agricultural life after a forty year dormancy; the restoration of a 900-year old casa colonica; the rebuilding of ancient stone terrace walls; the planting of vineyards, olive groves, fruit orchards and vegetable gardens; the reintroduction of animal husbandry.

Tour lasts approximately 1 hour. Reservations required at least seventy two (72) hours in advance. Minimum 2 people.

Wild and Edible

Our signature dish at Petraia is called Serra and Selva (literally ‘Greenhouse and Woods’), a delicious and stunning plate composed of wild and cultivated herbs, greens and flowers. Take a walk with us and learn how to identify these many spontaneous edible plants that grow wild or have gone wild on the property. Things like cardoons, fennel, onions and garlic, a variety of brassicas, grapes, dandelion, nepitella, mentuccia, cherries, calendula, a plethora of legumes like favino & chick peas, chicory, cicerbita, oxalis, artemisia, alliaria, elder, strawberry, margheritina, biancospino, dog rose, salvastrella and mushrooms like the famous porcino, piataoili, shaggy mane and russula. Landscape Literacy

An intimate and fascinating glimpse into Petraia’s past from Etruscan times (700 BC) to the present day. You’ll discover how this rich history has informed every step we have taken in the restoration of the property. We’ll guide you through our regal chestnut grove and show how this famous orchard was carefully planned and tended centuries ago. An important food source for the local people and for the abundant species of game that have always been a significant source of protein in their diet, the forest remains home to 600 year old trees, edible plants and a plethora of wildlife. Artifacts, manmade and natural, reveal Petraia’s legacy.
